It’s Been a Long Time Coming

It’s been a long time coming since I first conceived the idea of “ditching school for a year to train with the monks at the shaolin temple” , but the time has finally come.

I arrived at Deng Feng today, and will head up the mountain tomorrow and as my American College counterparts would do, start the “move-in” process. Training will probably start as soon as I am moved in, so like tomorrow.

But wow, I am finally here. Only now do I realized how crazily unprecedented my whole “gap year idea” is. Honestly, this isn’t a very popular route for, well, anyone. But it is this level of uncertainty and room for (growth, exploration, pain, knowledge and etc.) that excites me.

Stay tuned, cause I hope to have an audience along for my journey.

Dear Beijing:

Dear Beijing:

We meet again today, it’s been 8 years since I last saw you. You have changed much, yet managed to not change at all. You are still loud (very annoying at times), you still talk weird, and yes you still think you are better than everyone else just cause you are the capital. But you are bigger now, you carry too much pressure and weigh, I hope you don’t break down one day, cause that will be bad.

From age 2-10, I spent every single day of my life with you, and you patiently observed my growth. You saw my first fall, first kiss (or did I bite her? i don’t know, but she was cute, she had short hair), and my first fight. Yes, I was even more “temper-mental” when I was younger. But I too, observed your growth. Other than getting richer, fatter, and consequently more unhealthy (with all the pollution), you have managed to keep the same intrinsic characteristics that makes you the cultural, historic, and political center of my homeland. But more importantly, you have remain a “home” for me.

Though I have left you for a place with equally as many “Asians”, if not more. You will always be my first home, and I will always get that warm, comfy feeling every time I see you.

Hope you don’t change too much, and try not to get any fatter ok? (cause you are at 6 circles now, don’t get any bigger).

Until next time, your  prodigal son

500 Days of Summer, not just a movie

So my little cousin from London, who also came back to see me off to Shaolin Temple because he loves martial arts too, asked me for relationship advice today because apparently the girl who sits next to him at boarding school looks exactly like Emma Watson (when she was 13). I don’t normally give advice, but this is EMMA WATSON we are talking about here, so I said yes.

The problem is I don’t have any knowledge or experience in “this area”, so I resorted to only source of “relationship-knowledge” that I had at the time, which was 500 Days of Summer on Movies on Demand on my flight. Thank God that was a Level 8 typhoon in HK region that delayed my flight 5 hours, so I had ample time to watch the movie on the new Airbus 380, which if I may add, is BIG.

After watching the entire movie for the first time (I fell asleep the last time I watched it), I wrote down some of the things I have learned so that I may help me cousin or hurt him for life, I don’t know yet. But here they are , you kinda have to watch the movie to get them.

1.) “There are many fishes in the sea. Nooo, there is only Summer. Oh wait, jk, there are many fishes in the sea”

2.) “There are two types of people in the world…..man and…..woman.”

3.) “You can only “love her officially” if you love the way she makes you feel”

4.) “Being single is totally UNDERRATED”

5.) “The best way to get over a woman is to turn her into literature, then burn the paperback version. ”

6.) “I have never told anyone that before” are the words to bring it to the next level in a relationship.

7.) Here is what “expectation” looks like, and here is what “reality” looks like. They don’t really look alike.

8.) People buy cards cause they don’t know how to say what they feel.

9.) Do not read “Picture of Dorian Gray” in a coffee shop alone, cause some guy will come and ask you about it and you will eventually marry him.

10.) Sometimes you can’t leave things to FATE, you have to decide.

That was about it, I wasn’t taking the whole time, I am not that weird.

“I like food more than I like woman”

I REALLY like food.

For some people it’s just “the stuff you eat”, but for me its the life-source of every living human being, I mean you can’t do shit if you don’t eat. Right? It’s also an art that calls for a great amount of detail, creativity, and skill; from the first step of selecting ingredients to the final step of plating aka “putting make-up on”,

I am one of those weirdos that would sneak into the kitchen at a restaurant and have a 45 min convo with the chef about cooking decisions, ingredients, and NBA trade news. I would also ask to speak to the chef if I eat something I really like, just to get his email and stuff so I can learn the recipe.  I take more pictures of food than I do of people, cause I think the food looks better. Food not only LOOKS great, but also TASTES great, at this point in my life, I cannot say the same about woman. Which is why I like food more than I like woman.

This is the first segment of #JustbeingJerry, which are a series of articles where I open up a bit and talk about myself, I hope it will add a bit more personality to the site.

Where the Hell Am I?

I am nearing the end of my “travelling days”, with about a little over a wk before finally heading over to Shaolin Temple to start my year-long training. I am currently in GuangXi province, in southern China, visiting relatives, climbing treacherous mountains, and getting raped by mosquitoes all day every day.

In exactly two days (Aug 14th), I will be leaving for Hong Kong, so if you are there and want to hang, PLEASE hit me up because I have all the time in the world. After HK, I will be heading back to my “first home” aka Beijing , from August 17th till August 21st. Walnut is like my “4th home”, I have lots of homes, literally and metaphorically.

For all my friends back in my “4th home” who are heading off to college for the first time, I wish you guys nothing but the best. Meet lots of people, makes lots of mistakes, and say all the wrong things. Cuz this is the time for those things. If anyone misses me too much, you can always reach me at koshimomo@gmail.com, I am a great listener.

Hahhahaha hahaha jk jk, only if you want to.

Taking Your Talents to South Beach was so…… LAST YEAR!!

That’s right, “taking your talents to South Beach?”, shit was last year. This year, especially this NBA off-season, it’s all about taking your talents to SoCal!!

Yes, as you can tell, I am hella excited that Mitch Kupchack actually wants to win again with all the wonderful moves he has pulled this off-season. First it was re-signing Jordan Hill who, other than being offensively-challenged, is actually a legit rebounder and a solid defender when he wants to be. Not signing often-lost and seemingly mute Ramon back, was good considering he bolted for more money, but what made the move even more genius was the kidnapping of Nash days after.

After the Nash signing, the “taking your talents” to Socal sorta died a bit, until savvy veteran PF Jamison left often league worst Cavs for the City of Angels. And for a few wks, die-hard Lakers fans did not hear much more, until last night. When rumors hit like raindrops on Asian rice field, rumors that Superman has found a home. Yes, DW12 aka Superman aka Dwight Howard is coming to the Lakers, and the only man we lost was big-“boy” Bynum. Yes, he is still a boy in my eyes, immature, lost, and unreliable.

What’s even better is that we kept the often-“softer than baby wipes” Pau Gasol, who other than being weak and sometimes pathetic, is a great PF possessing unbelievable vision, control, and knowledge of the Lakers’s system and the game of b-ball. I don’t always blog about Basketball, but when I do, it’s because I have nothing better to do.

Sadly I will be at Shaolin for a yr, but I hope all you “real” Laker fans enjoy this season and hopefully collect enough bottles to save up for a game ticket.

Here are the Details if you want to:

Lakers; Dwight Howard

Philadelphia: Bynum and Jason Richardson

Denver: Andre Iguodala
Orlando:
 Aaron Affalo
Nick Vucevic
Mo Harkless
Al Harrington
first round picks from Lakers, Phil and Denver

I must Confess……

I must confess that I have done some really bad things. Here is a recent one.

So I was playing “badassminton” a week or so ago, and a problem came up. The problem was that my stamina was too good to always be playing with people my age, cause they would always get tired. (I am not sure if they were tired physically or tired of playing with me) But as a result of my stamina, I sometimes would be paired up to play some opponents who I would not normally play with if I had a choice. Well, this is where the problem begins.

I eventually got paired up to play with this little girl (she was like 15 but looked 12, and actually looked a LOT like my lil sis’s lil sis,if you know who that is), and being respectful I decided to play my best and give it my all cause I assumed that’s what every opponent expected. The game was going well, she was really good, forcing me to run a lot with changing angles and drop shots, this in turn got me really FIRED up, and you know how i can get when I am fired up. Finally, after much volleying, she made a mistake in offering up a gentle lob, and I could not resist the chance to overhead smack that …… So that’s what I did.

However, just when I was about to SMASH the ball, my racket slipped out of my hand and flew forward, and by some “bad” fortunes, it struck the little girl. And tears began to fall like a faucet turned on full throttle. At first I was like, “hey she doesn’t look like my lil sis’ lil sis anymore”, but then I started to feel really bad. So I approached her to see if any serious damage was done. Much to my relief, she wasn’t hurt that bad, no broken bones or ruptured veins, but she was very much emotionally shocked or rather surprised that a racket would fly at her. She had some scratches on her, so I carried her to the benches and bought her an ice cream and a can of beer. The ice cream for emotionally joy and the beer to ice down some of her scratches, in hopes that it won’t swell up. Surprisingly she was up and playing again in no time, after the tears had dried.

So I went back and started playing again, but it took me a LONG time to find someone to play with. Guess no one else wanted a racket to the body, but luckily for them my racket never slipped again.
